Ukraine and Russia have exchanged 175 prisoners of war each in their latest swap, just ahead of a temporary ceasefire to mark Orthodox Easter.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine secured the return of 175 servicemen and seven civilians, noting that many of the soldiers had been held in Russian captivity since 2022 and had fought across key frontlines from the east to the south.
On the other side, Russia’s Defence Ministry said it also received 175 servicemen, along with seven civilians from the Kursk region. The exchange was reportedly mediated by the United Arab Emirates.
Despite ongoing tensions, prisoner swaps remain one of the few consistent outcomes in the prolonged conflict between Kyiv and Moscow, even as broader peace talks—largely brokered by the United States—remain stalled, particularly over territorial disputes.
In a parallel move, both countries have agreed to a short 32-hour ceasefire to observe Orthodox Easter. Russia says the truce began at 4 p.m. Saturday and will run until midnight Sunday.
Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine is prepared to hold fire, but made it clear the response will depend on Russia’s actions.
“The absence of Russian strikes in the air, on land, and at sea will mean no response from our side,” he said, adding that the Easter ceasefire could open the door to more meaningful steps toward peace.
